Washington, DC (UNIS) – In celebration of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America’s (UCCA) 70th anniversary year (founded in on May 24, 2940 in Washington, DC), a gala inaugural reception will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 to commemorate this fete. Guests of honor include Shevchenko Freedom Award recipients former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski (invited); former Secretary of State Madeline Albright (invited); Members of Congress, in particular members of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus (confirmed); Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States (confirmed); former Members of Congress (confirmed); hierarchy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (confirmed); the Honorable Paula Dobriansky representing her late father and long-time UCCA President Dr. Lev Dobriansky; representatives from various Ukrainian community organizations; as well as, representatives of Central and East European ethnic organizations.
The gala congressional reception will be the inaugural commemoration of the UCCA’s 70 years of dedicated service to the Ukrainian community. Other activities throughout the year include celebrations in communities throughout the United States; a DVD short-history highlighting the UCCA’s achievements since 1940; and, a culminating banquet gala in New York in May 2011.
Since its founding in 1940, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America has been at the forefront of issues representing the concerns of Americans of Ukrainian descent and holds as its heritage the formation of the Educational Council, known for its vibrant Ukrainian Saturday school program; its Washington public affairs office – Ukrainian National information Service (UNIS); the publication of The Ukrainian Quarterly; major congressional initiatives in Washington including Captive Nations Week, the building of the Taras Shevchenko monument and spearheading the erection of the Ukrainian Genocide Memorial to the victims of the Holodomor; and, countless initiatives for humanitarian and educational assistance to Ukraine both before and after its renewed independence.
The gala reception will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 6-8pm in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room B-354; suggested donation - $35.
