| In 1998, UNIS fostered the
successful passage of a Concurrent Resolution,
with 72 Representatives and 18 Senators acting as
co-sponsors, in commemoration of the 65th
anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine. Each year UNIS is host
to an observance on Capitol Hill to commemorate
Ukrainian Independence Day. This annual
congressional reception raises the awareness of
Ukraine on Capitol Hill, as well as provides an
opportunity for the Ukrainian-American community,
as constituents to their local Representative or
Senator, to demonstrate concerns regarding U.S.-Ukrainian
issues. One of UNIS’ ongoing projects includes
Ukraine’s graduation from the Jackson-Vanik
amendment, which would afford it a permanent most-favored-nation
(MFN) trade status, thus boosting trade between
Ukraine and the United States.
