UNIS and the Government

The formation of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus (CUC) was initiated by UNIS nearly two years ago as a vehicle for furthering the development of U.S.-Ukrainian relations and promoting awareness about Ukraine in Congress. Since then, the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus (CUC) has grown to 30 members. One of the Caucus’ major projects includes a congressional trip to Ukraine to inaugurate a formal interparliamentary exchange with members of the Ukrainian Parliament. This program is designed to establish permanent semi-annual exchanges of Members of Congress and Ukrainian parliamentarians to bolster ties between the two legislatures.

In the past several years, UNIS was instrumental in promoting sustained levels of the U.S. foreign assistance to Ukraine. Thanks largely to UNIS' tireless efforts, Ukraine has been the third largest recipient of assistance provided by the U.S. government, and the largest within the former Soviet republics.
In 1998, UNIS fostered the successful passage of a Concurrent Resolution, with 72 Representatives and 18 Senators acting as co-sponsors, in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine.

Each year UNIS is host to an observance on Capitol Hill to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day. This annual congressional reception raises the awareness of Ukraine on Capitol Hill, as well as provides an opportunity for the Ukrainian-American community, as constituents to their local Representative or Senator, to demonstrate concerns regarding U.S.-Ukrainian issues. One of UNIS’ ongoing projects includes Ukraine’s graduation from the Jackson-Vanik amendment, which would afford it a permanent most-favored-nation (MFN) trade status, thus boosting trade between Ukraine and the United States.
