welcomed Ukraine’s President to New York
Orange
Revolution leader Viktor Yushchenko honored at The Pierre
NEW YORK – Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, leader of last fall’s
Orange Revolution in Ukraine, was honored at a banquet at The Pierre on
September 16 by New York’s Ukrainian American community on his first visit
here as president. President Yushchenko traveled to New York for the plenary
meeting of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly, and on
September 17 accepted the 2005 Philadelphia Liberty Medal in Philadelphia.
The banquet’s Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Michael Sawkiw of the
Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and Ulana Kekish of the Ukrainian
National Women’s League of America, had the honor of introducing the evening’s
speakers which included Askold Lozynskyj, President of the Ukrainian World
Congress, Ambassdor William Green Miller, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine,
Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko, Wife of the President of Ukraine, and The Honorable
Viktor Yushchenko, President of Ukraine.
In a heartwarming 50-minute address, President Yushchenko thanked the members
of the metropolitan Ukrainian American community for their tireless efforts
throughout the years of Ukraine’s struggle for liberation and their support
for the democratization process in Ukraine. The President expressed his
gratitude to the community for their enthusiastic support of the Orange
Revolution and their critical participation in the decisive elections of 2004.
“The
Ukrainian American community was honored to welcome the leader of our
ancestral homeland to New York City,” said Tamara Olexy, Chair of the
Committee for the Welcoming of His Excellency Viktor Yushchenko, President of
Ukraine in New York City.
In
addition to the leaders and members of the Ukrainian American community, the
banquet, which hosted over 380 guests, drew several prominent individuals
including Borys Tarasyuk, Ukraine Minister of Foreign Affairs, William Green
Miller, Former US Ambassador to Ukraine, Valery Kuchinsky, Ukraine’s
Ambassador to the United Nations, Serhiy Pohoreltsev, Consul General of
Ukraine in New York, and Vitaly Klitschko, heavyweight boxing champion.
The
banquet was organized by a coalition of Ukrainian American organizations of
the New York metropolitan area. Spearheaded by the Ukrainian Congress
Committee of America, the committee members included: Ukrainian American
Coordinating Committee, Ukrainain National Women’s League of America,
Association for the Democratization of Ukraine, Organization for the Defense
of Four Freedoms of Ukraine, Organization in the Defense of Lemko Western
Ukraine, Organization for the Rebirth of Ukraine Plast, Ukrainian Scouting
Organization – USA, Providence Association of Ukrainian Catholics in America,
Selfreliance Association, Selfreliance (NJ) Federal Credit Union, Self
Reliance (NY) Federal Credit Union, Shevchenko Scientific Society, Society of
