The Ukrainian Quarterly Seeks Your Assistance in This 70th Anniversary Year of the UCCA

Conceived in crisis and born of necessity, this scholarly, refereed journal of Ukrainian and International Affairs has been in existence for over 65 years. As its spiritus muvens, the late ambassador Professor Lev Dobriansky once observed, its “consuming interest has always been. . . the contribution of fact and truth to our American national concerns in their relation to human rights and the geostrategic importance of Ukraine.”  Ambassador Dobriansky saw The Ukrainian Quarterly as a scholarly “journal with a moral sense and ethical foundation.”

These words, ladies and gentlemen, are as true and valid today as they were 16 years ago when the ambassador made that statement on the occasion of the Journal’s 50th anniversary in 1994. Looking at the Journal’s development during the recent past and pursuing it into the living present, one cannot help but be impressed and gratified by the broad spectrum of the material published: history, literature, political science, economics, theology, sociology, psychology and other disciplines are well represented on its pages. No area of human endeavor is alien to us, except for the somewhat esoteric natural sciences. The articles comprising each issue are, for the most part, written in clean, spare and easily accessible prose; they are scholarly without being pedantic, objective, at times evocative, and always interesting and informative.

Ladies and gentlemen, having offered perhaps one might say, rather immodestly, this modicum of self-praise, may I be permitted to share with you the following information: the editors of the Ukrainian Quarterly plan to publish a special issue of the journal dedicated to its sponsor, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, on the occasion of its 70th jubilee. I would like to take this opportunity to invite those among you, who over the years have worked assiduously for our righteous cause, to contribute to this issue. Articles, documents and commentaries concerning the achievements of the Ukrainian Congress Committee as well as personal memoirs about the outstanding men and women, who have left an indelible imprint on our organization, are most welcome. Please consult our “Guidelines for Submission” printed at the end of most issues. And while I cannot, a priori, guarantee acceptance for publication, I can assure you that each submission will be given careful consideration by the editors.

I would like to conclude with a sincere reiteration of my best wishes to the members of the Ukrainian Congress Committee and to all of you, ladies and gentlemen, who support us and who cherish the cause of a free, independent and democratic Ukraine.

Leonid Rudnytzky, Editor, The Ukrainian Quarterly
