Washington, DC (UNIS) -   In what has become an annual springtime ritual in Washington DC, the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), the Washington public-affairs bureau of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), has sponsored “Ukrainian Days” advocacy event.  During the two-day affair, the Ukrainian community is afforded an opportunity to meet with government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) involved in formulating and monitoring U.S. policy toward Ukraine, as well as to interact with Members of Congress to discuss the community’s concerns.

Continuing this tradition, UNIS will once again sponsor “Ukrainian Days” in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26, 2012. This year, the endeavor is especially critical considering the upcoming parliamentary elections in Ukraine in October; the NATO Summit being held in Chicago, Illinois in May; as well as, the U.S. elections in November .  Having to overcome the notion of “Ukraine-fatigue”, the task of “Ukrainian Days” will be to convey to Congress the vital importance of enhancing support for Ukraine’s struggling civil society.

The two-day advocacy program will be in conjunction with the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC) advocacy event on Wednesday, April 25th.  As a founding member of the CEEC, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America works in tandem with the Coalition to advance U.S. foreign policy issues in the Central and East European region.  Participants of the joint “Ukrainian Days” and CEEC advocacy event will have an opportunity to interact with Washington DC policy makers and government officials on issues of importance to our community.

The “Ukrainian Days” program will also include a gala reception commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS).  Founded by the UCCA during the height of the Cold War in 1977, UNIS has been instrumental in advocating the community’s concerns for three-and-a-half decades.  Its unwavering commitment in bringing about independence for Ukraine and, since 1991 enhancing the bilateral relations between Ukraine and the United States, has earned it much respect throughout Washington.

SAVE THE DATE and advance our community’s concerns in Washington and celebrate the Ukrainian National Information Service’s 35th anniversary – APRIL 25-26, 2012.    Further information will be forthcoming on the UCCA website at www.ucca.org.
